“I know what you did last Summer” – First of all my wish that you all have had a great Summer with your family and loved ones! It certainly has been a HOT one, but with school starting, we are once again settling into the rhythm of daily living. There are a couple of Summer experiences that I would like to share with you, but I will tackle only one on this issue.
The first one is the result of my prideful behavior, which God knows very well how to take care of. Our parish had some indoor physical renovations and families were invited to come in and help clean the pews, which were not replaced. I showed up to help and with my usual “fat mouth” I told our pastor, that I wanted to do: “the most difficult job and what nobody wanted to do”, he quickly pointed me to the person giving out the responsibilities who, handed me a spatula and directed me to the bottom of the pews. My job for the morning would be to scrape chewing gum and other organic substances from the bottom of the pews… YUCK! Talk about humble pie!!! I was to spend 4 hours scraping… but before I continue, we have a message from our sponsors: “PLEASE dispose of your gum properly before sitting in Church. Thank You!”…This has been a public announcement we now resume our regularly scheduled programming.
As you can imagine 4 hours on my back under those pews were quite amusing and even though every so often some joker would kick the pew to make sure that I hadn’t fallen asleep, it gave me some time to think. Polishing the pews made them look pretty good, considering they old pews and you would have had to lay on the floor to notice the many things stuck under them. This got me thinking about how much I am like the old pews… How I put forward my best face, my best behavior in front of people, but then in my private and/or secret life, there are many pieces of gum, dirt, my own sin, which remains hidden to those around me, although never from God. He can see the entire “pew”, so why do I continue to live this “dual” life, why am I such a hypocrite? In one word: PRIDE! I’m just plain afraid of what others may think of me, that they may find out that I’m weak, that I’m imperfect, that I fail constantly. But aren’t we all carrying the same burden? And while we hide it quite effectively from others, we can’t hide it from God. That is why I’m praying for the grace to become more transparent, something that I can’t do by myself, but only through God’s grace. This is a painful and difficult process, but I hope and pray that God gives you the grace to become more and more transparent, like Jesus is and please, pray for me too.
